PITTSTON PROGRESS FILE PHOTO Pittston will celebrate Columbus Day will a procession to the newly restored Christopher Columbus statue at noon Sunday, Oct. 8.

The city of Pittston has more reason to celebrate Columbus Day this year.

With the restored Christopher Columbus statue in place, the city has planned a procession and rededication ceremony for Sunday, Oct. 8, the day before Columbus Day.

“We’re excited to have this procession,” said city events coordinator Sarah Donahue. “We’ll have a formal rededication on his (Columbus) day.”

The procession will start at the Tomato Festival grounds and make its way to the statue starting at noon on Oct. 8, with the rededication program starting once the procession reaches the statue.

The Knights of Columbus Chapter on South Main Street will hold a reception following the rededication.

The Knights of Columbus will participate in the procession, along with the Jacquelines, the Columbus Day Association of Lackawanna County, the San Cataldo Society, the Montedoro Society, the Browntown Italian Citizens’ Club, the Wilkes-Barre chapter of UNICO National, the Italian American Association of Luzerne County, the St. Ubaldo Society of Jessup, local elected officials, the Greater Pittston Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Pittston City Fire Department and the Greater Pittston Regional Ambulance.

The Cino Paci Band will lead the procession.

The city’s Columbus statue was restored to its place on Main Street just in time for this year’s Tomato Festival, after a crash put it out of commission last December.

A man crashed his car into the corner of the statue, causing it to fall off its pedestal. The man was not injured, but the statue needed restoration work.

Donahue said the procession brings back a Columbus Day tradition that fizzled when the former St. Rocco’s church shut down.

“There was always a procession from St. Rocco’s to the statue,” she said. “We’re excited to bring that back.”,
