Luzerne County has notified Dupont Borough of the upcoming free tire collection which will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Hanover Area Junior/Senior High School, 1600 Sans Souci Parkway. Pre-registration is required and there is a limit of 16 tires per vehicle. Tires will not be accepted without a pre-registration number. Please call 1-800-821-7654 to register.

Acceptable tires are: automobile, motorcycle, light pick-up trucks, SUV, ATV and farm tractor tires. Tires must be whole, removed from rims, be uncut and free of liquids and heavy mud.

Dupont Council plans to vote at the council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, to have the Dupont Public Works Department pick up tires from residents for the October tire collection, eliminating the need for Dupont residents to take the tires to the collection site in Hanover Twp.

Prior to the regular meeting, a special public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, to review a liquor license at 279 Main St., the former location of Chef’s Corner.

The meetings will be held in the Dupont Municipal James Cocco Council Chambers.

Change to voting location

Dupont Borough will not having voting for the November general election at the municipal building this year. The Luzerne County Election Bureau meet Wednesday and announced the new location will be at the Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Calendar photo submissions

Photos for the borough calendar are due by Monday, Sept. 30. If your organization would like to have their photos in next year’s calendar, please send them to borough manager Pat McDonald.

Holy Mother of Sorrows flea market and harvest festival

This weekend Holy Mother of Sorrows is holding its annual giant flea market on the church grounds from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, under a big tent. Various Polish foods, including pierogi, potato pancakes, haluski and golbki will be available for purchase during the event.

The 43rd annual Polish Dozynki Festival will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8. In keeping with tradition left by their Polish ancestors, Holy Mother of Sorrows conducts the Dozynki Festival or harvest festival every year. The word Dozynki derives from the Polish word meaning to cut down or reap, thus relating to the harvest. The harvest wreath will be blessed at noon in the church. Live music will be featured from 2 to 6 p.m.

Little League meeting

The September meeting of the Avoca/Dupont Little League will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Avoca Borough Building. At this meeting, league officers for the 2019-20 season will be elected. The beginning of the fall season, continuation of the league’s combining with Pittston City and Duryea, as well as all regular league business will be discussed. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

School taxes

Sue Gregory announces the 2019 school taxes have been mailed. She will have office hours from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the municipal building. If you are in need of an appointment or have not received your tax bill, please contact Gregory at 570-262-4100.

VFW meetings

Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909 will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at the post home. Many items of importance will be discussed and reports given. Commander Mike Hope will preside. The Home Association meeting will follow. Food and refreshments will be served after both meetings.

VFW Sock Hop dinner dance

The Dupont VFW Post 4909 Home Association will hold a Sock Hop dinner dance Saturday, Sept. 14.

Millennium will provide music for your listening and dancing pleasure from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A dinner buffet will be served from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. and the bar will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

The donation for a great night of fun is $30 per person.

Lions Club news

Dupont Lions Club will hold its first meeting of the new Lion year at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at the VFW in Dupont.

The group will start off this new year with a review of upcoming events and plans. September events include: District Rally at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Plains Pavilion. Cost is $12 per person. Make reservations with Terry at 570-510-0728.

The Dupont Lions Club will hold installation of officers for the new Lion year at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at the VFW post home. Officers to be installed are: President Jeff Roche, Vice President Tom Lello, Secretary Linda Zaneski and Treasurer Bart Bryk.

The Dupont Lions Club recently ran the concession stand for the Dupont Youth Baseball Organization’s annual softball tournament. The club gives a big Lion’s roar to and sincerely thanks DYBO, the participating teams, their fans and all other residents and visitors who stopped by to make a purchase. That same roar and thanks also goes out to everyone who donated beverages, buns or homemade foods. All of this provided for a very successful fundraiser for the Lions, which will help the club to continue to serve our community.

Pro-life baby shower

A pro-life baby shower sponsored by the Pastoral Outreach Apostolate of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church will be held the weekend of Sept. 14-15 to benefit the Wyoming Valley Chapter of Pennsylvanians for Human Life.

The group is collecting new, unused baby items, such as sleepers, blankets/afghans, quilts, washcloths and towels, disposable diapers, etc. Clothing is needed in sizes newborn to 24 months. Donations can be dropped off before or after all Masses and can be placed in the play pen located in the church narthex. Monetary donations also will be gratefully accepted and can be placed in the collection basket or sent to the parish office in a marked envelope indicating a donation to the baby shower.

The Pastoral Outreach Apostolate invites the public to attend the mock baby shower in the church hall after the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Sacred Heart picnic thank you dinner

The Rev. Thomas Petro invites all parishioners who volunteered to make the 72nd annual parish picnic such a success to an appreciation dinner.

The dinner will be held Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Dupont Hose Company. A social will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5:30.

To make a reservation, complete the form available in the weekly church bulletin and submit it no later than Sunday, Sept. 22. Place your form in the collection basket, mail it, or email it to the parish office. Please do not call the parish office to make reservations.

Club meeting

Elm Street Sportsmen’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at the club in Suscon. John Lizak will preside.

Gas conversion

Residents who have converted to gas or those looking into gas service are reminded UGI offers a variety of rebates and incentives to help customers lower their energy bills through the use of high efficiency equipment. Rebates are available for customers who install qualifying residential and commercial heating and water heating equipment between Jan. 1, 2017 and Sept. 30, 2021. Hose company meeting

Dupont Volunteer Hose Company will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the company home. The annual fund drive will top the agenda.

Medication disposal

You can safely dispose of unused or expired medicine by dropping them in the prescription collection drop box located inside the Dupont Municipal Building during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Please remove personal information from all bottles. 

Items accepted are: prescriptions, prescription patches and ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, sample and medication for pets.

Non-acceptable items include: thermometers, hydrogen peroxides, inhalers and needles, medications from businesses or clinical sand aerosol cans.
