Each year the United Way of Wyoming Valley provides money to supplement the local food banks funded by their Christmas in July Drive for Feeding and Reading. In partnership with the United Way of Wyoming Valley, the Dupont Lions Club Food has been able to supplement the December food distribution with holiday hams. The Lions Club has been a recipient of generous grant for at least five years. Thank You United Way!
The monthly food distribution sponsored by the Dupont Lions will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Hall on Lackawanna Avenue. All qualifying residents of Dupont and Suscon are eligible.
Hose Co. spreads cheer
The Dupont Volunteer Hose Company will travel with Santa and Friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, throughout town spreading holiday cheer and of course candy=. So listen for “Ho, Ho, Ho” because Santa is coming to town.
Children’s Christmas party
Santa and friends will attend the Children’s Christmas Party this Saturday, Dec. 16. The festive event is sponsored by Dupont Borough and the VFW Post 4909 and will be held at the VFW Post Home on Main St. from 1 to 3 p.m. Each child will receive a small gift and prizes will be awarded. Refreshments and plenty of goodies will be served.
‘Wreaths Across America’ at Memorial Park
Also on Saturday, Dec. 16, John Vargo, Commander of the Sons of AMVETS will hold “Wreaths Across America” services at Dupont Borough Memorial Park adjacent to the municipal offices beginning at noon. Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, the mission to “Remember, Honor and Teach” is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery as well as over 1,200 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Refreshments will follow in the lower level of the VFW on Main Street. All are welcome.
Progress Committee meets
The Dupont Progress Committee will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20 at the Dupont municipal offices.
Christmas Mass schedule
Holy Mother of Sorrows services will be held at 4 and 10 p.m. Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, and 10 a.m. Christmas Day.
Sacred Heart of Jesus services will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, and at midnight Christmas Day.
Koledy Polskie or Polish language carols will be sung in church prior to Midnight Mass starting at 11:30 p.m. Also Mass services 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
New Year’s Eve at the VFW
A New Year’s Eve Party sponsored by the Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4909 will be held at the post home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17. Dinner buffet will be served from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. and the open bar from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Music by Millennium from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Late-night snacks platters, donuts, coffee, hats, noise makers and leis will also be provided. Donation is only $40 per person and tickets and reservations may be made by seeing Bob Lopata at the VFW or calling Bob at 570-654-9104.
The 2018 refuse bags will be on sale beginning Monday, Dec. 18. Cost is $115 for family residential, $85 for senior citizens and $150 for commercial accounts. Bills were mailed Friday, Dec. 15. Anyone not receiving a bill should contact the borough office.
The reorganization meeting of the Borough Council will be held at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 2 in the James Cocco Council chambers, Dupont Municipal Building.

Snow ordinance reminder
There is a parking restriction after three inches or more of snow to allow plow trucks through. On the day after, there is no parking on evened-number side of the street. On the second day after, there is no parking on odd-numbered side of the street. Sidewalks must be cleared within 48 hours. This includes vacant properties The piling of snow within intersections is not permitted. it is illegal to throw snow onto any roadway at any time.
Snow plowing takes priority over recycling. Please hold recycling until the next scheduled pickup day.
61st wedding anniversary
Congratulations to Bernie and Eleanor Babonis who will be celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary on Dec. 29. Bernie will also celebrate his 84th birthday on Dec. 26.
