The football gridirons are warming up in the summer heat, and the Duryea Wildcats have been preparing to grill their competition as they prepare for the upcoming season.
In an effort to support their athletic efforts, the Wildcats will have a car wash and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Germania Hose Company, 430 Foote Ave. The car wash cost is $5 per car or truck.
American Legion news
Duryea American Legion Brennan Regan Post 585 is seeking barmaids/bartenders to work nights/weekends at the post home. Some experience is needed. Interested parties may apply from 1 to 6 p.m. daily at the post home, 329 Main St. or by calling 570-457-4242.
Duryea Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 585, will hold its monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Brennan Regan post home, 329 Main St. Membership dues can be paid at this time. All new officers who will be sworn in must attend this meeting.
The Duryea American Legion, Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary officials will have their swearing-in ceremonies at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Brennan Regan Post 585, 329 Main St.
All officers that were elected must attend and wear their uniforms.
The 11th annual 1st. Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Sand Springs Golf Course, Drums.
Registration begins at 7 a.m. with a captain and crew tee-off at 8 a.m. Cost is $75 per golfer, which includes green fees, use of a cart, dinner and awards. All proceeds will benefit the 1st Lt. Jeffrey DePrimo Memorial Fund of the Luzerne Foundation.
National Night Out
The Duryea and Dupont Neighborhood Crime Watch groups will host its 10th annual National Night Out from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Healey Playground, 300 Foote Ave.
The event includes various presentations and interaction with law enforcement, firefighters and emergency first responders, which builds a greater sense of community amongst our neighbors.
Phoenix to present
Phoenix Performing Art Center will present Disney’s “Newsies: The Musical,” at the center, 409 Main St. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11.
Tickets are $12. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling the box office at 570-457-3589. Booster seats are available for children. Handicap seating is available too.
St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will host a “blessing of the harvest” at the 9 a.m. Mass Sunday, Aug. 11, at the church, 200 Stephenson St. At this event, which is held in anticipation of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, attendees may bring vegetables, flowers and herbs grown in their garden to give thanks to God.
Anyone who does not have a garden may bring produce purchased at a market.
St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church will host a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, on the church grounds, 200 Stephenson St.
Participants can rent an 8-by-2 foot space for $10, where they can place their own table to sell unwanted treasures. Vendors and crafters are welcome. There also will be food and beverages for sale, as well as a bake sale. To reserve a table space, call 570-457-2291.
Duryea Street Department collection schedule for the week of Aug. 11 is as follows: garbage, Monday, Aug. 12 and Tuesday, Aug. 13, and yard waste, Friday, Aug. 16. No recycling will be collected this week.
Duryea Borough Council will meet Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the municipal building, 315 Main St. The public work session is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting is at 7.
Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 and Duryea Scout Troop 375 will host a flag retirement ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the post home, 492 Stephenson St.
Anyone who has a flag to retire may leave it in the collection container at the post home. If the event is canceled due to rain, it will be rescheduled in the fall.

Community yard sale
Duryea Betterment Committee will sponsor the town-wide Duryea Community Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.
Interested parties can participate in two different ways. On the day of the event, residents can have a yard sale at their residence. Or, if they would prefer not to have a sale at their home, residents may reserve a sales space at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church, 200 Stephenson St., for $10.
Note that space at the church is limited. Please contact the church at 570-457-2291 to make a reservation.
Residents who choose to have the sale at their home must have a permit.
Permits, which are free and will be mailed to you, can be obtained by calling Duryea Borough Manager, Carolyn Santee, at 570-655-2829, during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Permits also can be obtained by calling Lois Hanczyc at 570-457-2482 or at the National Night Out on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Healey Playground.
Maps of the sale locations will be available at the Duryea Municipal Building, 315 Main St., at various Duryea businesses and on the Duryea Betterment Committee Facebook page.

VFW craft beer fest
Duryea Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227 will host a classic craft beer fest from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the post home, 492 Stephenson St.
In addition to the craft beer selection, there also will be food trucks, vendors and live entertainment.
