Tammy Satkowski and the welcoming committee at Sacred Heart Church in Dupont knew piles of Christmas cookies would become the recipe for a successful fundraiser.
“We thought it would be a nice way to start the season off,” Satkowski said. “It was a suggestion from one of our members and we thought, ‘let’s go for it.’”
The church held its first cookie walk this month, and members did not disappoint. Satkowski said they had 60 kinds of cookies and candy on hand for people to peruse and choose to fill their platters.
“It was fantastic; we had a great turnout,” she said.
Satkowski said the cookie walk likely proved successful since so many people love special cookies around the Christmas season, but more and more people lack the time to bake.
“It was nice for me because I got a big selection,” she said.
They kept track of what sold out — a variety called choco nut dainties went first, swiftly followed by nut roll cookies, Christmas cutout cookies, welsh cookies and all of the anisette cookies available, Satkowksi said.
Satkowski has her own fond memories of Christmas cookies, much like Purple Squirrel bakery owner Cindi Pape, who has been churning out mostly nut rolls for customers looking to fill their holiday dessert tables.
“Our customers started placing orders in October,” she said.
While nut roll is her biggest seller, Pape said she has plenty of Christmas cookie memories.
“My mom and I would start baking a few weeks before Christmas,” she said. “My favorite memory was decorating her sugar cookies. She did all the making and rolling and I had all the fun.”
Satkowski has kept a similar tradition alive in her family.
“I like thumbprint cookies. When I make mine I roll them in nuts and with icing in the middle,” she said. “I’ve been making them with my daughter since she was old enough to stand on a chair, and I baked those with my mother and she baked them with her mother.”
Pape hoped to sneak in a couple batches of her favorite Christmas cookie — Kolache.
“They’re a traditional Polish cookie, an amazing cream cheese dough filled with apricot preserves that just melt in your mouth,” she said. “I think every family has their own ‘best cookie.’ It’s really an emotional attachment to those family recipes.”
