Misericordia University presented the Father John Bendik Scholarship Award to Michael Diakunczak of Edison, N.J., at the 36th annual Leadership Awards Dinner. The Bendik award is named after Monsignor John Bendik, who was university chaplain from 1981-87. He also was pastor of St. John the Evangelist, Pittston, for many years. The scholarship is awarded to a rising senior who has demonstrated service to the campus community. The first scholarship was awarded in 1988. Diakunczak is in the mass communications and design program with a specialization in sport communications. A member of the Cougars football team, he serves as commuter coordinator for student government, columnist for The Highlander student newspaper, and member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He also is a spokesperson for the Kittim N. Sherrod Foundation and has assisted with media and video production with Volunteers in Medicine, Volunteers of America, Grandparents Raise Grandchildren and Eckley Miners Village. He also has served as sideline cameraman and broadcaster for Misericordia sporting events and is student manager for the Misericordia Phone-A-Thon.
