On Sunday, March 3, a select few Pittston Area students will begin the Math Modeling Challenge sponsored by MathWorks, aka MC3. MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge is a contest for high school junior and seniors, with teams comprised of three to five students and one teacher/coach. The 14-hour M3 challenge, which begins at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Pittston Area High School’s computer lab, will push the limits of what the students know about math and test their ability to work as a team under strict time restraints. They will tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints like those faced by professional mathematicians working in industry. The top three teams will share $45,000 in scholarships, with $100,000 in total awarded to 37 winning teams. Also, the three top winners will receive transportation and accommodation to travel to New York City to present to a panel of judges and network with computational professionals. First row, from left, are team members Nick McGlynn, Kierstein Grieco and Nathaniel Wesnak. Second row is James Kupetz, senior high math teacher, who will serve as the teacher/coach. Sarah Pontier and Chris Miles also are members of the team.
